DGEG visits Évora Renewable Energy Chair's Molten Salt Platform

The Director General of Energy and Geology (DGEG), Jerónimo Cunha, visited the Chair of Renewable Energies at the University of Évora (CER-UÉ) this Tuesday.

Accompanied by CER-UÉ responsible, Pedro Horta, as well as by DGEG and CER-UÉ researchers, the visit aimed at presenting the best of what is being done at CER-UÉ and outlining future strategies in the support to solar energy projects in Portugal.

During the visit, Jerónimo Cunha got to know, among other ongoing activities, the objectives and partnership of SALTopower, having the chance to visit the research infrastructure, with a particular focus on the Évora Molten Salt Platform.

SALTOpower aims to create a European reference facility for the development and testing of molten salt-based technologies for energy storage solutions and dispatchable energy production, for the integration of different renewable energy sources and electricity and gas networks.

“The visit of our Director General of Energy and Geology was an opportunity to discuss, among other questions, the possibilities opened by molten salt technologies not only in the field of Concentrated Solar Power but also in the development of innovative large capacity storage concepts and business models or in the development of inter-grid approaches to a more flexible energy system, e.g. by means of the coupling of molten salt thermal storage with power-to-X strategies”, said Pedro Horta.
